Sleep Better on the South Jersey Shore by Blocking Blue Light
What's the last thing you do before falling asleep?
Turn off a table lamp? Stop scrolling on your phone? Turn off the TV?
Consuming artificial light just before bedtime can interfere with sleep, leaving you restless and alert rather than sleepy and relaxed. Standard white LED bulbs in your lamps and overhead lighting, as well as digital device screens, emit a heavy dose of blue light that can mess up sleep patterns and even strain your eyes.
The solution for better sleep and less eye strain at night is to install blue light-blocking bulbs in your bedside lamp and to refrain from using digital device screens two to three hours before bedtime.
What Blue Light-Blocking Bulb Should I Buy?
At Comfort Now by Bob McAllister, we are huge fans of BlockBlueLight products. You might know us as the South Jersey Shore's trusted HVAC company, and wonder why we're promoting lightbulbs!
We believe that the ideal living space goes beyond reliable heating and cooling and good indoor air quality (IAQ). It also includes the light you use throughout the day and at night.
BlockBlueLight bulbs can improve your lighting and your well-being in Egg Harbor Township, NJ by removing the blue light emitted by standard LED bulbs.
What's Blue Light?
Blue light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum along with other colors of visible light, including violet, indigo, green, yellow, orange, and red. The spectrum also includes invisible light, such as infrared and ultraviolet light.
Light is measured in nanometers (nm). The visible light spectrum ranges from about 380 nm to 740 nm, with shorter wavelengths carrying more energy. Blue light sits at the high-energy end of this visible spectrum. Red light has the longest wavelength. Violet has the shortest.
The sun radiates all colors of the spectrum, which we see as white light. The blue light in natural daylight boosts our alertness, uplifts our mood, and increases our reaction times. After sunrise, your body detects the blue light and understands that it's time to be alert. It also knows that after dark, it's time for rest and repair.
However, standard LED and incandescent bulbs, and digital screens, which emit blue light, can confuse us into thinking it is still daylight long after the sun has set. Those same blue-light characteristics that keep our minds stay sharp during the day can disrupt our sleep patterns at night.
How Blue Light Affects Your Circadian Rhythm
Light exposure plays a huge role in regulating your internal clock, called the circadian rhythm.
When blue light enters your eyes in the evening, it hits cells that send a direct signal to your brain, which immediately stops your body from producing melatonin, the hormone responsible for inducing sleepiness.
Standard bright white or daylight bulbs at night, trick your brain into thinking the sun is still shining. It suppresses your melatonin levels and keeps your nervous system wired. Falling into a deep, restorative sleep becomes a challenge.
A Harvard University experiment compared 6.5 hours of exposure to blue light versus green light. The blue light suppressed melatonin for twice as long and affected circadian rhythms by twice as much.
Blocking Blue Light Enhances Your Health
Installing low-blue or zero-blue lighting in your home can positively affect your health. The benefits extend far beyond simply falling asleep faster:
Better Sleep: By allowing your natural melatonin production to kick in on schedule, you experience deeper sleep with rapid eye movement (REM). You wake up feeling refreshed rather than tired.
Reduced Eye Strain: Constant exposure to harsh, high-flicker artificial lighting strains the muscles in your eyes. Warmer, amber-spectrum lighting gives your eyes a break at the end of the day.
Wellness: Disrupting the circadian rhythm is linked to elevated stress hormones, such as cortisol and poor blood sugar regulation. Protecting your evening sleep cycle supports wellness.
Avoiding Blue Light at Night
Red lights are less likely to suppress melatonin and alter your circadian rhythm. Use them at night.
Turn off the television, quit using your laptop, and stop scrolling on your smartphone two or three hours before bedtime.
If you must use your electronic devices at night, wear blue light-blocking eyeglasses.
BlockBlueLight Products
The standard orange and red bulbs on the hardware store shelf won't deliver the solution you need for a good night's sleep. Some simply use colored glass or coatings on a standard white LED bulb to create colored light without blocking blue light. Some also emit a high-frequency electrical flicker that can cause eye strain and headaches.
You need a special bulb designed and engineered to filter out blue light and maintain a steady electrical current without flickering. That's exactly what BlockBlueLight products do. Some even remove green light too.
Here's a sample of BlockBlueLight bulbs:
SweetDreams Bulbs: Ideal for bedside lamps and nighttime use in living areas. They cast a candle-like glow that eliminates blue light.
BioLight: This bulb emits bright, blue light in the morning, serves as a neutral light in the afternoon, and blocks all blue light at night.
